Publicand scholars haven’t yet reached an agreement on whether great artists orpolitical leaders bring more benefits to society. Some contends thatpoliticians contribute more as they play a significant role in maintainingsocial order; in contrast, some feels artists much more important because theart works they create are of countless value. These two perspectives, however, are both too partial and subjective in my view. Certain answer is supposed tobe based on certain social stage. Here is why. Ifthe society is undergoing a stage when people are suffering hunger, poverty, and disease, political leaders will bring more benefits than artists do,because they make monumental contribution to overcoming these difficulties andleading society to gain prosperity. Just imagine, when people are under theextremity of pain: chaos of war, deficiency of food and water, and threat ofdeath, how could they have leisure appreciating the so-called pricelessartworks? Their basic requirements haven’t yet been satisfied! Will you stillbelieve society under such situation benefits more from artists? During thesemiserable days, governmental leaders adopt regulatory control, diplomacy andother effective measures to solve the crisis. Consequently, technology, economic and environment will gain marvelous development. People don’t need toworry about personal safety any more. For the whole society, the benefits comedefinitely from political leaders, rather than artists. If,it is the other situation, however, when the society has reached awell-regulated stage—in the aspects of economic, politic and naturalenvironment, great artists will devote more to social happiness than politiciansdo. Various elements provide evidence for this point. For one thing, facing notrouble dealing with urgent problems of people’s livelihood, our society nolonger has pressing needs for outstanding political leaders. What a politicianought to do is just to maintain the prosperity, which don’t necessarily requireso-brilliant skills. Therefore, benefits politicians bring to society arecorrespondingly reduced. For another thing, living in an age of coziness, people have more motivation to pursue glorious spiritual life, which thereforeimpulses the development of arts forward. Artists in various fields spring upand animate our society with extraordinary artworks. In contrast, feats ofpolitical leaders seem just trifling. Theanswer to “whether or not society benefits more from works of great artiststhan from political leaders” shouldn’t be a sweeping statement. In other words, taking into account a given period of society is essential. Either artists orpoliticians, however, are vital characters glorifying our social life.
