Stephen Dillane, 57, grew up in London. He studied at Exeter University, then joined the Croydon Advertiser but left to enrol at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. In the early 1990s, his performance in the National Theatre's Angels In America and his Hamlet for the Peter Hall Company attracted critical acclaim. In 2000, he won a Tony award for his role in Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing. His films include Welcome To Sarajevo (1997) and The Hours (2002). Since 2012, he has played Stannis Baratheon in TV's Game Of Thrones, and he starred in the Sky Atlantic thriller The Tunnel, which is out on DVD. He has two sons with the actor Naomi Wirthner.
When were you happiest?
Playing football in the school playground at lunchtime.
What is your earliest memory?
Giving my sister "Smarties" that I knew were pills.
Which living person do you most admire, and why?
Russell Brand, for being his own man.
What is the trait you most deplore in yourself?
Grandiosity/submissiveness.
What is the trait you most deplore in others?
Disagreeing with me.
What would your super power be?
Flying.
What makes you unhappy?
Other people.
If you could bring something extinct back to life, what would you choose?
Procoptodon – a giant kangaroo.
Who would play you in the film of your life?
Daniel Auteuil.
What is your favourite smell?
Breakfast.
Is it better to give or to receive?
They're neck-and-neck.
What is your guiltiest pleasure?
Schadenfreude.
What is the worst job you've done?
Work experience in a bank when I was 15.
What is your favourite book?
Gargoyles, by Thomas Bernhard.
What is the worst thing anyone's said to you?
"I slept with Doug."
What do you owe your parents?
The whole damn thing.
To whom would you most like to say sorry, and why?
Not much point in apologising yet, because I'm still doing all the stuff I'd apologise for.
What or who is the love of your life?
Naomi.
What does love feel like?
Liberation.
What was the best kiss of your life?
On the coach coming back from the German exchange with Sandra Hurst.
Which living person do you most despise, and why?
Me, unfortunately. For all the stuff I should apologise for.
When did you last cry, and why?
In the first room of the Australian art exhibition at the RA. Don't know why. Loved it.
How often do you have sex?
Between and including never and often.
What single thing would improve the quality of your life?
A sense of purpose.
What song would you like played at your funeral?
I'd like the enormous congregation to sing Leonard Cohen's Come Healing.
What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
"Dear incomprehension, it's thanks to you I'll be myself, in the end" (Beckett).
Tell us a secret.
It was me and Jim who stole the "Inquiries" sign from above the front desk at Exeter police station.
