Wang Meng completely dominated the competition at the 2010 Games. The 28-year-old short track speed skater won three gold medals in Vancouver and one in Torino, making her China’s most successful Winter Olympic athlete. But in August of 2011, she was expelled from China’s national team for fighting with the team manager after a night out of drinking. In September of 2012, she was given permission to return to competition. She finished first in the overall World Cup standings for the 500m distance in the 2012-2013 season. She’ll look to add a fifth gold to her Olympic collection when she returns to Sochi in 2014.
Hamelin won the hearts of Canadians in 2010 when he won two gold medals in the 500m and the 5000m relay. He also won a silver medal in Torino and finished first in the overall World Cup standings for the 500m distance in the 2012-2013 season. Hamelin is at the top of his game and could be a multiple medal winner in the 2014 Games.
Celski won two bronze medals in Vancouver, which might not sound all that impressive, but it is when you consider he injured himself just five months before the 2010 Games. Celski cut his leg open with the blade of his skate and nearly severed an artery that could have killed the 23-year-old American. It required 60 stitches. After an ankle injury in 2011, Celski came back with an impressive 2012 season, breaking the record time for the 500m distance at a World Cup event in Calgary. He should be the most competitive American male participating in short track and will look to complete his comeback from injury in Sochi.
Viktor Ahn, also known as Ahn Hyun-Soo, is one of the most accomplished short track speed skaters in history. He won three gold medals in the 2006 Olympics for South Korea but will be representing Russia in 2014. After injuries sidelined him, Ahn failed to qualify for the 2010 Games for a deep and talented South Korean team. Ahn became a Russian citizen and opted to race for them in 2014 and will lead a much improved Russian team on their home ice.
Shim Suk-Hee has never won an Olympic medal, but that might change in 2014. The 16-year-old finished first in the overall World Cup standings for the 1500m distance in the 2012-2013 season. She’s part of a South Korean team that has outstanding depth and could find their way to the podium in Sochi.
