    Unit 1
    A
    A body language
Debbie and Simon have looked up as an old lady entered their office. The lady looked at them both quickly, and then walked over to Debbie. Debbie greeted her cheerfully.
Simon sighed and took some papers over to the fax machine. Chris, a senior member of staff, was standing there
"What’s up, Simon? You don’t look very happy. "
"Customers always prefer Debbie to me. I can’t understand it. "
"I can. It’s the way you communicate."
"How can that be? " Simon said. "I don't even get a chance to speak to them."
"Communicating is not just about speaking. Body language is important, too "
    "Body language?"
"I mean your gestures and the expression on your face. Your whole appearance communicates things as well as your words."
"The way you look at people doesn’t give them a good impression, Simon. You often rest your head on your hand. You look down. You never smile."
"But look at Debbie. She holds her head up. She looks at people’s eyes. She smiles before speaking to the. That’s why they go to her for help, and not you."
After that, Simon tried to improve his body language. He sat up and smiled at people. This seemed to work. Minutes later, a beautiful girl entered. She looked at Debbie and then Simon. Without hesitating, she went to Simon and gave him a big smile. A few moments later, she left, still smiling.
Chris came over at once and said, "Well done, Simon. You made a good impression on her."
"That was my sister, " Simon said.” She came to remind me that tomorrow is her birthday."

      B. Eye contact
Throughout the history of mankind, people have communicated with body language. In many situations, the way you something is far more important than what you say
Eye contact is sometimes the key to communication. It can signal friendliness or hostility, interest or boredom, and understanding or confusion
In Western cultures, making eye contact in conversations is necessary. As a matter of fact, a westerner might consider a lack of eye contact as a lack of intertwine Spain, Italy and Greece, where people stand close together talking to each other, eye contact is more frequent and lasts longer
In many Asian cultures, avoiding eye contact shows respect. It is done when talking with anyone in authority or with anyone older
Habits like this can cause problems when people do not understand them. For instance, an Asian might close his eyes in concentration or look down while listening to a speaker. A Western speaker might think the man is not interested
Eye contact is a subtle thing. Avoiding eye contact might be considered impolite, but staring at others is also considered rude and should be avoided

B How can we deal with bullying?
James is a good student and he has lots of friends, but he also has a problem. Some older boys are bullying him at school.James is very unhappy and he doesn't know what to do about it.Here are some suggestions to him and other teenagers in this situation.
.. Don't feel worried. It's not your fault! Being bullied can make you feel very lonely and angry, but you are not alone.Don't feel that you have to hide the problem. You should find a person you can trust, and tell them.It might be your teacher, your parents,or even your friend's parents. After you tell someone, you will get some support and feel some relief.
.. Speaking to an adult might make you nervous, but here are other things you can do.Some people express their feelings more easily on paper.Write a letter to someone or keep a diary.Include all the details about what the bullies do, as well as when and where the bullying happens. You can use it as proof to show what is going on.And it is a wonderful idea to show your letter or diary to a teacher or another responsible adult. Then the bullies will feel very afraid if their names appear in a letter!
Also, don't show you are sad and don't try and fight with the bullies. You could get in trouble yourself. Ignore them and just walk away. The bullies will soon stop

A The Phantom of the Opera
The Paris Opera House is a huge building. Beneath the building there is a strange, dark lake. On this lake is an island. On that island, one hundred years ago, lived the Phantom.
He was born he was so ugly at birth that his own mother made him wear a mask and forced him to leave home while still a child. He spent years wandering around Paris until he built his home on the island. Amazingly, this monster of a man... loved singing and had a wonderful voice.
                ...
The Phantom fell in love with Christine, a beautiful young singer at the Opera. He often stood near her room late at night and sang to her. He even helped her improve her singing and become the Opera’s most popular singer. Christine could not see the Phantom, and thought that he must be an angel.
But Christine had already agreed to marry her childhood friend, Raoul. When the Phantom learnt about this, it broke his heart. He kidnapped her from the stage in front of the whole audience. Then he took her to his secret home on the lake. Only Raoul was brave enough to follow. But the Phantom captured him and locked him away.
In the Phantom’s home, Christine finally pulled off his mask. She was shocked at his horrible face, with yellow eyes and no nose. But she felt very sorry for him. She understood how lonely he must be. She gently kissed his face.
Christine’s kindness made the Phantom cry. He let Raoul go, and told him to take Christine away. Some people from the Opera arrived at the Phantom’s home, ready to kill him. But the Phantom magically disappeared, and was never seen again.

<?xml:namespace prefix="o" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office">B The world of the theatre
Theatre is popular around the world. British theatre is expecially well know created famous plays such as Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet over 400 years ago, they are still loved today. In Shakespear’s time, however, theater performances were very different from modern ones.
Traditional theatres in the UK were round and had a stage in the middle. There was no roof above the stage, so when it rained everyone got very wet. Strangely, all the actors were male. Even the female characters were played by men! If the audience liked the play, they threw money onto the stage. If they didn’t enjoy it, they threw smelly old vegetables.
Some countries have far more ancient theatre traditions than Britain. For example, Chinese theatre is more than 1,000 years old. Puppet shows were a very popular kind of theatre during the Tang Dynasty. Musical performances were also widespread, and often include dramatic stories, sing and dancing. Beijing Opera is a world-famous example of traditional Chinese theatre.
In today’s world, plays and musicals are performed in huge buildings and often have modern costumes and fantastic special effects. However, some old theatre traditions still remain. For example, never say “good luck” to an actor in Britain. They think it brings bad luck! You should say “break a leg” instead. Also, it is still common to throw things onto the stage after performance in a British theatre, but it is more usual for people to throw flowers instead of money or vegetables today. </?xml:namespace>

Many people consider Albert Einstein (1879-1955) a genius. His attempt to explain how the universe works made him famous. Einstein said that his only gift was curiosity, but he also had a great sense of humour.
Einstein received many invitations to talk about his ideas. On these trips his driver was a man called Hans. Hans often said, “It’s a pleasure to drive a genius like you, Dr Einstein.”
One evening, on their way to a distant university, Einstein said, “I’m so tired, Hans. I don’t want to speak tonight.”
“You don’t have to,” said Hans. “I will present the lecture instead. I’ve listened to it so many times that I know it by heart. No one knows you here, so they won’t find out.”
At the university, Hans as led to a platform in a great hall. Einstein sat in the audience, listened to Hans present his lecture perfectly, and joined in the applause at the end.
However, before Hans left the platform, a professor said, “I’d like to ask you a question.” He asked a question so complex that Hans could not answer it.
Einstein thought, “Now we’ve in trouble!” But Hans just laughed and said, “That’s not a difficult question. In fact, it’s so easy that even my driver knows how to answer it. Hans, please…” Einstein stood up and answered the question perfectly.
They left the university, with Einstein at the wheel. A little later, Hans offered to drive. “No, my friend,” laughed Einstein. “It’s a pleasure to drive a genius like you, Hans.”

                      B The “black” tulip
Nature is filled with amazing plants. Some can survive in the middle of the desert. Others can grow up to 80 metres tall. However, imaginary things can sometimes create as much excitement as real ones. In Holland, the most famous flower is found in the pages of a book!

In 1850 the writer Alexandre Dumas wrote a novel called The Black Tulip. In the story, a young man called Cornelius tried to create a “black” tulip that would help him win a gardening competition. However, just before he succeeded he was put in prison unfairly. He felt sad, and was ready to give up his dream. But then he met Rosa, the beautiful daughter of the prison guard. They fell in love and together found a special way to cultivate the “black” tulip. Cornelius finally claimed victory in the competition.

The book was extremely successful and sold faster than any of Dumas’s other works. People all over Europe wanted to grow a real black tulip like the one in the tale. But in nature most flowers have bright colours. People have cultivated flowers that look black, giving them names like Black Parrot or Black Diamond. In reality, though, these “black” tulips are actually a very dark purple colour. Most scientists think a truly black flower does not really exist. However, flower lovers have tried their best to make this romantic dream come true. Do you think one day someone will succeed?
