Rebecca
Daphne Du Maurier
Chapter one
Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again. It seemed to me I stood by the
iron gate leading to the drive (drive这里不是驾驶的意思,是指从街道通向住宅的宽阔或私人的车道)and for a while I could not enter, for the way was barred(bar 阻挡,拦住)to me. There was a padlock (padlock挂锁) and a chain upon the gate. I
called in my dream to the lodge(lodge 公园或宅第的门口小屋,门房) keeper and had no answer, and peering (peer 仔细看,端详) closer through the rusted (rusted生锈的) spokes (辐条,轮辐) of the gate I saw that the lodge was uninhabited
No smoke came from the chimney, and the little lattice windows (lattice window 花格窗;斜条结构窗) gaped (gape 张开,裂开,豁开) forlorn (forlorn凄凉的,荒凉的). Then, like all the dreamers, I was possessed of a sudden with supernatural powers and passed like a spirit (sprit 这里指灵魂) through the barrier before me. The
drive wound (wound这里是wind的过去式蜿蜒,曲折而行;迂回) away in front of me,
twisting and turning as it had always done, but as I advanced I was aware that a change had come upon it; It was narrow and unkept, not the drive that we had
known. At first I was puzzled and did not understand, and it was only when I bent my head to avoid the low swinging branch of a tree that I realized what had
happened. Nature had come into her own again and little by little, in her
stealthy (stealthy偷偷摸摸的;不声张的的;秘密的) insidious (insidious 潜伏的;隐袭的;隐伏的) way had encroached (encroach侵蚀,蚕食) upon the drive with long,
tenacious (tenacious顽强的;坚忍的) fingers. The woods, always a menace even in
the past, had triumphed in the end. They crowded, dark and uncontrolled, to the
borders of the drive. The beeches (beech植物山毛榉) with white, naked limbs leant close to one another, their branches intermingled (intermingle混合) in a strange embrace, making a vault (vault 拱顶;穹窿) above my head like the archway of a
church. And there were other trees as well, trees that I did not recognize, squat(squat 矮胖的) oaks and tortured elms(elm 植物榆树) that straggled(straggle蔓生;杂乱地蔓延;散布) cheek by jowl(cheek by jowl并肩地,紧密的) with
beeches, and had thrust themselves out of the quiet earth, along with monster
shrubs and plants, none of which I remembered. 今日难词: drive:(also drive-way) a wide hard path or a private road that leads from the
street to a house There are two cars parked
in/on the drive. bar: to block a road, path, etc. so that nobody can pass We found our way barred by rocks. padlock:a type of lock that is used to fasten two things together or to fasten
