Instructions for Tsinghua University Freshmen

Study
·Keep the timetable for your lessons and locate for the classrooms in advance.
·You can buy second-hand textbooks from senior fellows, which saves a lot.
·Remember that self-study is important for a freshman, and you have much time to do it.
·Library provides the ultimate environment for self-study but you need your ID to check in.
·Don't use valuable things such as wallets to occupy a seat in a self-study room etc.
·Don't speak loud in a self-study room.
·Make full use of the library and other available resources.
·As you like it, you can listen to the lectures held periodically.
·Don't feel too upset when you fall behind, as you are among all excellent students.

Living
·Keep your dormitory clean and tidy and arrange your personal belongings methodically.
·Don't forget to maintain a supply of hot water for drinking and washing.
·Remember to lock the door up when there's nobody in the dormitory.
·Eating in Tsinghua is no problem, but canteens vary from one to another. No.9 is the best one whose food is very cheap but No.14 is terrible as their soup may be toxic.
·Wear more and drink more in winter, since Beijing is really cold and dry.

Communication
·Make friends with your classmates, roommates and neighborhoods.
·Keep in touch with senior fellows, as they can often give you useful advice.
·Don't get too close to the opposite sex.
·You can use telephone to communicate with your home and your friends.
·To telephone, you need a 201 card, an IC card and preferably an IP card, for distant calls.

Sports
·Keep in mind that freshmen are required to run either 3km or 1.5km, so practice them.
·Sports time is 16:30-17:30 Mon-Fri, but the east sports field is open 24 hours a day.

Entertainment
·There are balls held every weekend, you can enjoy yourself.
·TV is available in dormitory, but don't indulge yourself in it.
·Clubs and associations recruit new members in September, you can register at that time.
·You're required to attend activities if you are a member of that club, so don't register for more than 2 clubs in order not to influence your study and regular life.
·You can receive Tsinghua Radio on band FM 86.5 MHz (Need a special radio).

Traveling
·You should buy a bicycle for routine travels.
·Take a map of campus with you. It is really helpful.
·Don't buy expensive or bright-colored ones, but a second-hand one if ever available. If you buy a new one, keep an eye on it, as bicycles are frequently stolen here.
·For more safety, have at least two locks on your bicycle and lock it to a fixture.
·Put your bicycles in the correct areas when you go to class so that it won't be removed.
·Don't rely on the police if you bicycle is stolen, but simply buy another one.
·Never override your bicycles on campus in the rush hour, it may cause damage to you.
·There is a bus on campus running from 8 to 17 at intervals of a quarter.
·It is recommended to take a bus for interuniversity traffic.

Special attention on computers
·It is not recommended (for some specific departments even not allowed) to have a computer in the dormitory during the first year, unless your study actually needs one.
·You can go to the computer lab in the basement of the main building from 8 to 22, ID card needed to check in.
·If you have a computer in your dormitory, you need a network cable to connect it to the LAN.
·Freshmen are offered 64 hours of free computer usage in the lab.
·Don't surf foreign web sites without a proxy as it causes extra money.
·Download resources from FTP sites if you need them, you can almost download anything.
·Don't waste time on computer games. Playing games in the lab is forbidden.

Other useful instructions
·Read the student's guidebook carefully and try to get familiar with the campus.
·Go to the supermarket behind Building No.8 for food, stationery etc.
·If you buy clothes, shoes or some like, you can go to Zhaolan department store.
·If you need something cheap, you can go to supermarkets outside the south gate of school.
·If you are ill, you can go to the hospital in the west.
·If you have psychic problem, you can go to the psychic information center in Building No.18.
