A Rolls-Royce belonging to former Queen frontman Freddie Mercury is being auctioned by Coys on January 12, 2013 as part of the Autosport International show at the NEC, Birmingham. It has a guide price of £9,000-£11,000.
Freddie Mercury's car takes pride of place among an impressive range of exotic and classic cars, such as a 1980 Ford Capri S from Only Fools and Horses (below), a 1966 Jaguar E-Type 4.2 Roadster, pre-war BMW Willis Special and a 1986 Metro 6R4 rally car.
Freddie Mercury's 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow (below) was purchased by the singer’s company Goose Productions Ltd in 1979 and was used by Freddie until his death in November 1991; it has remained with his family since. The car’s paperwork includes a letter confirming that the Silver Shadow, registered WLX 293M, was purchased for Freddie’s personal use. However, Mercury didn't have a driving licence so relied on chauffeurs.
Last used for the premiere of the Queen musical We Will Rock You in 2002, the 6.75-litre, V8-engined car with automatic transmission is still in the same visual condition as when Freddie last used it. It has a grey leather and wood trim interior, with automatic locking, electric windows, a car phone and radio cassette player, and has just 62,000 miles on the clock.
Apparently, the car also features a box of unused Kleenex Mansize Tissues, which remain from when the car was in Freddie’s possession.
Autosport International and The Performance Car Show take place from January 12-13. Tickets cost from £31 and can be bought from the Autosport International website.
