It is worthremarking that S. John applies the term αἰώνιος to nothing but ‘life,’ and that forthis aeonian life the word is always ζωή and never βίος. Βίος does not occurin S. John’s Gospel at all, and only twice in the First Epistle;—in the phrasesἡ ἀλαζονεία τοῦ βίου (John 2:16), ‘the vain glory of life,’ i.e. arrogancy andostentation exhibited in the manner of living, and ὁ βίος τοῦ κόσμου (John 3:17), ‘the world’s means of life,’ i.e. the goods of thisworld. In Aristotle and Greek philosophy generally βίος is higher thanζωή: βίος is the lifepeculiar to man as a moral being; ζωή is the vital principle which he shareswith brutes and vegetables. In N.T. ζωή is higher than βίος: βίος is, as before,the life or livelihood of man; but ζωή is the vital principle which he shareswith God. Contrast βίος in Luke 8:14; Luke 8:43; Luke 15:12; Luke 15:30; 1 Timothy 2:2; 2 Timothy 2:4, &c. with ζωή in John 1:4; John 3:36; John 5:24; John 5:26; John 5:29; John 5:40, &c.,&c. Βίος occurs less than a dozen times in the whole of the N.T.,whereas ζωή occurs upwards of a hundred times: ζωή is the verysum and substance of the Gospel. ‘The life eternal is this, that they shouldknow Thee the only true God, and Him whom Thou didst send, even Jesus Christ’ (John 17:3).
