【20130301】中国网络攻击
Chinese cyber-attacks
Hello, Unit 61398

AN AMERICAN information-security firm has identified asecretive Chinese military unit as the likely source of hacking attacks against more than a hundred companies around the world. In a report made public on Tuesday, the firm, Mandiant, based in Alexandria, Virginia, said it could now back upsuspicions it first reported in more qualified form in 2010.
The firm had said then the Chinese government may have authorised the hacking activity it had traced to China, but that there was “no way to determine the extent” of official involvement. In its new report, Mandiant upgrades its assessment. “The details we have analysed during hundreds of investigations convince us that the groups conducting these activities are based primarily in China and that the Chinese government is aware of them,” the report said.
China’s government has denied the allegations. Hong Lei, aspokesman forChina’s foreign ministry, said on February 19th that China has itself been a victim of cyber-attacks, and that it enforces laws that ban such activity. “Groundless criticism is irresponsible and unprofessional, and it will not help to solvethe problem," he said of the Mandiant report.

【20130302】丹尼斯·罗德曼的朝鲜之旅
Dennis Rodman’s bizarre trip to North Korea: Is it also unethical?
Posted by Max Fisher on February 26, 2013 at 12:11 pmFrom WashingtonPost

American basketball star DennisRodman and several members of the Harlem Globetrotters are in North Korea, where they will film for aforthcoming Vice/HBO program and promote some “basketball diplomacy,” includingpick-up games in Pyongyang.
Whatever the trip’s impact, itreminds me of a debate that I’ve heard many times among people who work onissues relating to North Korea: What are the ethical pros and cons of visitingthe world’s most oppressive country? Although there is no consensus view and asignificant number of North Korea-watchers say that visiting the country helpsto open it up, I most frequently hear experts argue that tourism is unethicalbecause it directly funds and offers free propaganda to the regime.
Scott Snyder of the Council onForeign Relations, with whom I exchanged e-mails several months ago about theethics of visiting North Korea, wrote back that “there are plenty of ethicaldilemmas and few answers when it comes to dealing with the DPRK.” He explained,“Any interaction with North Korea involves an element of moral hazard. It was acentral question that dominated and polarized the humanitarian aid communityfrom the start of its interaction with North Korea in response to the famine inthe mid-1990s.”

Smiling and waving in newly released film footage intended as a souvenir, British tourists get ready for take-off in Egyptian hot-air balloon which crashed moments later, killing 19
By Christian Gysin
PUBLISHED: 23:54 GMT, 1 March 2013 | UPDATED: 01:20 GMT, 2 March 2013
Their faces show the mixed emotions you might expect in a group of tourists about to embark on a thrilling holiday adventure.
Some smile and wave, while others look apprehensive as they prepare to take to the skies in a balloon overEgypt’sValley of the Kings.
Minutes later, the craft was to explode and crash to the ground, killing all but two of the 21 people on board. Video footage emerged yesterday of the preparations for the ill-fated trip, which was recorded by the flight organisers to sell to passengers as a souvenir.

Michael Rennie - the only tourist to survive the Egyptian hot air balloon catastrophe on Tuesday - smiles in an orange bandana next to his wife Yvonne, 48. At one point Mr Rennie, 49, hints that this is his second flight as he says to the camera:‘Round two... here we go again’

Last moments of hot air balloon crash victims caught on camera.

The tourists were all smiles as they prepared for their 'dream' flight. To the right, Suzanna Gyetvai puts her arm around her boyfriend.

【20130307】后查韦斯时代
Venezuela after Chávez
Now for the reckoning

IN THE flesh he seemed indestructible. Hugo Chávez was not especially tall, but he was built like one of the tanks he once commanded. He was possessed of seemingly inexhaustible energy. He travelled incessantly, both around his vast country and abroad. Each Sunday he would host live television shows lasting up to 12 hours. He would ring up ministers in the early hours of the morning to harangue them. For 14 years, everything that happened in Venezuela passed through his hands,or so he liked to think.
Yet Mr Chávez turned out to have been as reckless with his health as with his country’s economy and its democracy. Those late nights were fuelled by dozens of cups of sweet Venezuelan coffee. When in mid-2011 he revealed that he had been operated on for cancer, the lack of detail (“a baseball-sized tumour in the pelvic region”) suggested that the diagnosis had come late. He turned down an offer of care from a Brazilian hospital that has recently cured three Latin American presidents of cancer, preferring treatment in Cuba, where his condition could be kept secret.
Rather than stand aside from the presidency, he insisted that he could run his country from his Havana sickbed. After another two operations and chemotherapy, he declared himself cured. Addicted to the drugs of power and popular acclaim, he campaigned for and won yet another six-year term in an election last October.
