WOWZA!!! Damn sexy and utterly wild. Episode 4 is with out a doubt one of my favourites from any series. It's an episode that jumped off the page immediately upon first read, we could not wait to set about creating the looks and styles we needed for such an intense episode.
Franky
Franky's confidence grows as her lust for Luke reaches its zenith. Luke is clearly the main influence on Franky's wardrobe. We start the episode with Franky striped down and strutting care free like never before. Riddled with guilt whilst experiencing visions of her dead friend, Franky resents and rebuffs the parental support offered to her by "the J/Geoff's". We play out this turmoil of the body and soul through her wardrobe with deep red herringbone leggings (made by our own Becci) striped tee, simple royal blue blazer from New Look and her edgy silver studded wedge baseball trainers.
Under the guidance of Luke, Franky quickly finds a way of releasing the guilt she feels through fighting and sex (errrrm, don't you?). As she falls further under Luke's spell we hear him advise her to get her 'disco garms' on (we now use the phrase 'disco garms' to describe everything in the wardrobe department). We've already opened up Franky to whole new world of fashion this year but placing her within a crowd that adheres to very strict rules when it comes to what they wear on their back was hugely exciting for me personally.
She dons a beautiful burnt orange dress (Zara) and dazzling silver sparkly shoes (Topshop) setting the moody pool hall backdrop a flame – in complete contrast to the gang's recent fighting this gives her a real 'kick-ass' style.
Outfit breakdown: girl gone bad.
GANG FIGHT – stripe round neck tee (Topshop), red and black herringbone skinny trousers (Custom made by Becky, costume trainee), blue suit jacket with white floral print lining (New Look), black studded silver trainers, red watch (Urban Outfitters)
POOL HALL – orange fitted dress (Zara), Purple socks, silver sparkly brogues (Topshop), red watch (Urban Outfitters)
VISITING NICK – pink knitted white peter pan collar (Topshop), blue dunagree dress (H&M), pale blue socks, lace-up leopard print wedges (Aldo), red watch (Urban Outfitters)
Luke
Luke is a complex character and the actor Joe Cole was brilliant at unpacking these complexities. We worked hard on getting Luke's wardrobe correct, as it's such a big part of whom he is. Luke's backstory consists of wheeling and dealing in all things, mostly narcotics. He does not want to invest in trivia, just his look.
Luke is one of the most stylish characters in Skins history. He likes to stand out as the gang's leader and alpha-male, modern mod! Luke only wears labels and has to look great at all times, namely when gang-scrapping. He needed rich colours in his wardrobe to make sure he visually dominates his gang and this was something we strived hard for from the off.
I searched high and low in nearly every TKMAXX in the country to find the bargain designers goods for high street prices. Luke’s first costume features the deep blood red Macintosh, an amazing find in TKMAXX. Add to this a navy wax jacket worn under to highlight the red and a designer brown/bronze shirt and we start to represent the danger present in this character.
As the episode develops we see flashes of The Joker in his character via a bright green Mac from Aquascutum (another great find from TKMAXX) ... this IS confidence. Smouldering!
For his final look and the faceoff with Franky’s father Jeff, we chose to mix all his colours from previous looks together, rich purple trousers, brown patent brogues, rich racing green shirt, and his signature double Macs layered over one another.
Outfit breakdown: STYLE!
GANG FIGHT – brown/bronze shirt with white collar (Unconditional), purple slim fit trousers (Topman), waxed navy jacket (Uniqlo) worn under Burgundy Mac (Macintosh), brown patent brogues (Marks and Spencer), silver watch (Tag)
COLLEGE – bright green mac (Aquascutum), deep purple collarless shirt (Unconditional), navy skinny trouser (COS), brown patent brogues (Marks and Spencer), silver watch (Tag)
FACEOFF WITH JEFF – bright green mac (Aquascutum), navy mac (TKMAXX), racing green shirt with black collar (COS), purple skinny trouser (Topman), brown patent brogues (Marks and Spencer), silver watch (Tag)
