Aside from The Walking Dead, Lauren isn’t a huge television watcher, although when she does watch TV she enjoys a lot of British comedy and mini-series, including the acclaimed series, Homeland. “I watched the whole season of Homeland in like a day and a half.” Even if she was a huge television fan, she wouldn’t be watching too much of it considering it took her three-and-half months to install her cable only to have it cut out again after a week. She now just has a big television in her living room with no connection.
Season three of the Walking Dead will be debuting soon and Lauren promises it will be a very action packed season with a lot more character development. “We’re always on the edge of a cliff, and [then] we take a couple steps back, [and] then we get push right back to the edge.” In this coming season, we will see Maggie and Glenn’s strong relationship go through the normal trials and tribulations that a normal relationship goes through – although most don’t have to worry about a zombie apocalypse. We will see the small but unified group try to cope, although they won’t meet back up with Andrea until around mid season. As for Lauren’s character, Maggie changed from a tear stricken farmer’s daughter to a zombie killing soldier. Nonetheless, Lauren promises that sweet southern girl is still in her despite the tougher exterior. Every character has found a different side to them, and she is happy her character has found hers.
Even though the show doesn’t follow the narrative of the popular graphic novels on which they are based, Lauren has read up to where the show is right now – the prison. And, she knows she is still alive at this point in the comics. “I only know that because Steven (Yeun) made such a big fuss about his character dying, it’s funny; it’s become a competition.”
According to Lauren, Robert Kirkman, the creator of the graphic novels, and executive producer of the show, makes jokes on set all the time about straying away from the comic and doing the most unexpected thing. On a show like this it’s a bit different since nobody knows who is going to die and when. On most television shows, when you guest star you have a contract which states your final episode on the show based on your character’s story arc, but in this case the actors are left in the dark as to how long they’ll be sticking around. All Lauren knows is it’s going to hurt when the time comes. “We saw it with Dale last year and we see it happen this year with people you’re just not going to expect, and it just makes you live for the moment.”
On the set Lauren is close with a lot of her co-stars, such as Norman Reedus (Daryl). Laurie Holden (Andrea), and Melissa McBride (Carol). She says she is probably closest to Steven Yeun, having become friends since they are always walking together on the job. Lauren thinks highly of Danai Gurira, who will be playing the much anticipated character Michonne this season, saying she is a huge fan of the actress, having even taken the time to see her in a play before she joined the cast for Season 3. “She’s very smart and very funny.”
Even though she named a few cast members, she is quick to point out that she gets along with everyone and knows it’s a privilege to be part of this show. She gets to be away, working in the middle of the Georgia countryside removed from all modern distractions. And while there is a lot about the shooting of the show that makes it great, what make the whole experience even better for her is the fans. From the fans who told her how her and Glenn’s relationship has given them a perspective on romance to just receiving gifts. “I got a whole Japanese dining set sent to me which is pretty amazing.”
As far as the future is concerned, Lauren she would like to do a comedy, and despite the fact she has moved in front of the camera, she would also like to do more theatre. She even has a couple things possible for this coming year, like a play in London. Singing is also a huge aspiration she would like to tackle, and she pointed out that we will see a bit of it in the show this season. Lauren jokes, “A whole movie full of song and joy and no zombie,” would be something she’d be interested in tackling. After a lot of improve, she would also like to throw her hat in the ring and host Saturday Night Live. Ambitious and talented, I’m sure that whatever she chooses to try, we will be seeing a lot of Lauren Cohan in the future.
