所有金融市场（financial market）都在一定程度上受到一长串经济变量的影响。
利率期货和期权市场中，宏观经济变量（macroeconomic variables）和政府宏观经济政策（gov't macroeconomic policies）高于经济学的基本要素（fundamental factors）。
股价指数（stock index price）受制于对总体商业环境（business climate）的预期。
外汇市场（foreign currency market）反映国家经济的相对优势以及全球利率和通胀率的差距。

美国大企业联合会（U.S. Conference Board）：
一个私人性质的非营利机构。
公布了一个广受尊重的商业周期测量法。
大企业联合会指标：21个影响金融市场的主要指标。
分成3类：
先行指标（leading indicators）；
同步指标（concurrent indicators）；
滞后指标（lagging indicators）。
先行指标提供与经济优势有关的前置信号。它们反映商业周期中的预期变化，因此提供一个预先警报系统（early warning system）用来确定金融变化。
同步指标和滞后指标显示经济的一般走向，证实或否定一种趋势或先行指标隐含的趋势中的变化。同步指标显示正在经济中发生的变化程度，而滞后指标显示已发生的变化程度。
10个先行指标，4个同步指标，7个滞后指标。
这些指数指示商业周期中的高峰和低谷（peaks and troughs）。
由于这些都是平均值，它们比组成每个指数（index）的单一变量（individual variables）要平滑。
美国大企业联合会也发布全球经济周期指标（global business cycle indicators），以及预测许多不同国家的经济表现。
