Was there some significance to changing the name of the doctor from the original story?
Mark Gill:
I think it was originally set it the '20s, so I contemporized it a lot. And the names were Eastern European, so I wanted to make it quintessentially English and uptight. And William, I just thought Prince William, really. Bit of a berk.
Have you considered a sequel or expanding it to include the doctor's experience playing God?
Mark Gill:
That's a question I get asked a lot. I don't think it's got legs for a feature. But I have written a comedy series which was optioned by BBC called, Revelations. In some ways it's like the Smithers and Burns relationship [from The Simpsons]. If you imagine God and Gabriel in that situation, getting up to mischief, again very human and set in the real world. You can imagine heaven as a crumbling British council, just really badly run. That's pretty much how I imagine heaven.

The Bilbo That Could Have Been

I sometimes wonder what The Lord of The Rings films would have been
like if different actors had been cast in the roles. And though I
haven’t seen The Hobbit films yet, I have become comfortable with the
actors playing my favorite characters, even though only months ago, I
may have been crossing my fingers for a different choice.
Tom Hollander, of Pirates of the Caribbean and Pride and Prejudice fame, recently revealed　that he auditioned for Frodo and Bilbo. “I was one of the first actors in London to be seen for Frodo ten years ago,” he said. “I didn’t get it, obviously. The right size, but too handsome apparently. Last year I was one of the last actors to be seen for Bilbo Baggins, when it looked as if Martin Freeman wouldn’t be released from Watson. Again, I was a good size for it, but once more, too symmetrical facially. That’s what my agent said, anyway.”

Even though his good looks kept him from both of these movie franchises, he has acted in　films with some top-notch Hobbit actors. He can be seen alongside Cate Blanchett in the recent film, Hanna, as well as Elizabeth: The Golden Age. He played the evil Cutler Beckett to Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner in　both Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End. And he shared screen time with Aidan Turner, who will play Kili, in Desperate Romantics.
