    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Since I haven’t had the mental bandwidth for long-form writing (i.e. proper
scrapbook posts) for a good while, but am currently in the midst of intensive
music-making, I’ve been trying a new experiment this week: making spoken
recordings, talking to all of you as I work.

A dispatch from my living room studio: the wall of sticky notes and a morning of song fragment mashups. “Each of these represents one song. They have the tempo written in one corner and the key in another, so I can get a sense of the variety (or lack thereof) that might be happening for this album. This is the one that I’m looking at this morning, one called ‘Enemy.’ I’ve thought about making a whole song with these repetitive chords, but I seem to have gotten stuck on that road. And then it occurred to me that I have two other bits of music that are pretty much in the same tempo…”

Fingerpicking and rambling about two songs, one finished and one very much not. “[This sound] started to feel like some kind of travel: roadtrips, things going by the window at high speed. I was thinking about my internship this summer and meeting people who work in oil, gas, mining. It’s this underlying layer that we think of as dirty, this necessary evil, but it actually underpins so much of what is good in this world, what is vibrant. I want to write about those extraction landscapes, the carting around of all this fuel.”

In which I abandon a tinkly piano part, make collegiate a cappella loops, dance around the living room and wrestle with barre chords on electric, all in an attempt to fall in love. “There’s always this point in the songwriting process, when a song starts to come into what it is, where I get infatuated with it, I want to play it over and over again, I think ‘This is amazing! I love this thing!’ And that’s notreally happening with this song. Part of the problem is that it feels like a song for a younger me, like if it had been written for Waking Hour I would have been really excited about it. But that was 20 year old me, and 33-going-on-34 year old me isin a different space. I need to find a different way in.”
