Fair play prize for German football fans
Who accepts a prize awarded to several million people? The German journalist association had the answer on Tuesday (13.03.07), as they presented the German chancellor Angela Merkel with the fair play prize 2006, awarded to the home fans at the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany, the fans at the table tennis world championships (also held in Germany) as well as the hockey world championships and the show jumping world championships. The Hertha skipper Arne Friedrich attended the ceremony as a representative for the German national team.
"The fans performed in a friendly and fair manner with competitors from all over the world", explained the VDS- president Erich Laaser.
Arne Friedrich was joined at the ceremony by the world championships stars Isabell Werth (show jumping), Björn Emmerling (hockey) and Timo Boll (table tennis). The trophy handed over was a crystal globe on five fragile feet.
The trophy was introduced in 1965 by the German boxing legend Max Schmeling. It was the third time that fans have been awarded the trophy. In 1972 the German crowd at the Olympic Games were awarded the trophy, and in the year 2000, the Sydney Olympic crowd won the award.
