Abstract With the development of computer science and digital communication technology, multimedia and internet are gradually growing up for the past few years. The requirement of image quality and precision are more and more critical. However, in the restriction of the limited communication bandwidth and the limited storage space, it is more and more difficult to meet the needs of the people by using JPEG compression standard. To deal with the contradiction between the high precision of an image and the small storage space of a image, JPEG2000 coding algorithm arises at the right moment.
The core algorithms of JPEG2000 coding algorithm are Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and embedded block with optimal truncation (EBCOT). The compression performance of an image has been promoted a lot because DWT is a method with good space-frequency localization characteristics and multi-resolution representation characteristics. This paper puts forward a hardware structure which bases on the lifting-based DWT. The proposed hardware structure not only optimizes the hardware structure of Discrete wavelet transform
