Key facts: On Wednesday evening, Josep Carreras took part to a talk show called Sinteza Zilei in the Romanian National Tv Channel, Antena 3, in occasion of the concert he offers today at the Sala Palatului in Bucharest. It is a very long, nice interview in which the tenor seems very relaxed and feeling confortable. Luckily the complete video is available. His answers are in spanish. The first topic is related to his foundamental professional meetings: he mentions Montserrat Caballé, Herbert von Karajan, and Leonard Bernstein, but states also that one could learn something by each director or partner he had worked with. He says to be honoured to perform again in Romania, a country so rich of culture, both musically and in the others forms of art. In the meantime there is a video with photos portraying Carreras in his childhood, in his first approach with music with his first recording of La Donna è Mobile. It follows with a brief narration of some moments of his career through parts of the "A life story" documentary. Carreras watches it with attention, and smiles when Pavarotti appears on the screen during the part dedicated to the Three Tenors' adventure. For sure it was a very meaningful smile, and as you will notice his smile comes out several times due to this kind of images and memories, and especially to his beloved friend Luciano. He speaks then about his childhood, and about the terrible lost of his mother when he was 18. She believed in his talent most of any other, but unfortunately she could never attend one of his adult performances. Still today, he dedicates to her the last thought before going on stage. He knows that according to her the most important thing was her son to be a good, honest and moral person, the rest was secondary. Music is not only a profession to him, but a real vocation he felt very early, and that provides him the privilege to express himself and his own emotions and feelings through singing, an extraordinary vehicle that makes him closer to people. ◦ His life has been full of fighting: fight for his national identity, for his homeland Catalonia, but always feeling affection and respect for Spain that has always treated him with particular generosity; fight after his mother's death, a tragic event that conditioned many of his personal choice, particularly when a son needs his mother; fight against leukemia, a terrible diagnosis he faced when he was 40, struggling for his unique possibility to survive. Besides the difficult circumstance, Carreras knows he has been lucky for the medical team he could rely on, for the love of his family, and for the great amount of shows of affection and support from people around the world that led him to the decision of creating a leukemia foundation. Among the various shows of affection, he can't forget mentioning his collegues and friends Domingo and Pavarotti who, in person or by phone-call, have always tried to transmit hope strenght to carry on, even thinking about future projects, or simply because "otherwise there were no competition" as Luciano used to tell him. Josep Carreras remembers the night of his comeback recital in Barcelona as the most thrilling ever in his life, because he could feel all the support and love of his people, of his hometown. It was a free recital attended by 150.000 people. Such moments makes him feel a very lucky person, as he has always been able to perceive love and affection by catalan, spanish and people from the rest of the world.
