SINGAPORE: Singapore stars Tay Ping Hui and Joanne Peh were the biggest winners at the Star Awards 2012 Show 2, with Tay bagging the Best Actor award, and Peh picking up the award for Best Actress during the annual awards show, which was held at Marina Bay Sands on Sunday.
Tay won for his portrayal of a lovable ruffian in the drama "Bountiful Blessings", while Peh got a nod for playing a materialistic man-eater in the drama "A Tale of 2 Cities".
"I'm glad that the judges were able to see the emotions behind the comedy. Xie Dong Hai (his character in 'Bountiful Blessings') is a big change for me.
"I put in a lot of effort," said Tay, who was also conferred the All Time Favourite Artiste award that evening, for winning the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artistes Award ten times over the years.
"I'm a little bit surprised because I always thought that Ge Ping and Christopher (Singapore actors Zheng Ge Ping and Christopher Lee who were nominated for their performances in "Kampong Ties" and "The Oath" respectively) were pretty good. "
"I think it goes to show that if you keep on grinding, keep on working hard ... don't give up and don't lose heart, eventually you'll get what you want.
"I don't like to lose, so at least now I can say 'I win already lor!'" Tay said with a wry grin.
Joanne Peh: Genuinely surprised
Peh too, expressed that she was very happy about her win, though she explained that her mind was a blank as the win was a huge surprise for her.
She was at a bit of a loss for words when she met reporters after her win.
"I really don't know what to say! I feel bad that every time time I go up on stage to receive an award; I keep saying my mind is a blank.
"I worry some people would say I am 'fake', but it's really true! I never expect to be able to go on stage and get an award," said the bubbly actress with a laugh.
"I have actually stopped thinking about the significance of the awards. I just think it's a very comforting feeling to gain recognition for your work."
When asked how she felt about beating top actresses like Fann Wong and Zoe Tay to the prize, Peh was very careful not to step on any toes.
