      在英国的一些小镇里,有许多二手货市场,里面的东西应用尽有。不妨去逛一逛,没准还能发现宝贝呢!
In every British town, large and small, you will find shops that sell secondhand goods, such as furniture (家具),books, household (家用的)goods, sometimes even clothes .
The furniture may often be very old,and it may well have changed hands many times. It many also be very valuable although the most valuable pieces will usually go to the London salesrooms (拍卖场),where one piece might be sold for thousands of pounds. As you look around these shops and see the polished (擦亮的)wooden boxes and tables, you cannot help thinking sadly of those long-dead hands which polished that wood,of those now-closed eyes which once looked at these pieces with love .
The books, too, may be old and very valuable, some may be rare first printings.Often when someone dies or has to move to a new place, his books many all be sold,so sometimes you may find that some people who work in libraries come to this kind of shop. One the border (边界)between England and Wales, there is a town it was once one a sheep market, but it has now become a huge bookshop as well. And now books have replaced sheep as the town’s main business .
The British treasure the past and the thing s of the past. This is true of houses as well. There days no one knocks them down. They are repaired until they are often better than new .
In Britain, people do not buy something just because they are new.Old things are treasured for their proven worth, new things have to prove themselves before they are accepted.
