Activator通常具有两个domains(功能区域)，一为DNA-binding domain(与DNA结合的地方)；一为transcription-activating domain(刺激转录的区域)。Jun-Fos上的DNA-binding domain分类属於leucine-zipper motif(白氨酸拉鍊) ，它利用两个α-Helix(α螺旋)上的leucine 之间互相作用，将两个monomer(单体)拉在一起，形成dimer，看起来像拉鍊一样，故得名。除此之外，leucine zipper还可使Jun-Fos上的basic region (富含碱性、带正电的氨基酸的区域)就定位，与DNA结合(DNA带负电)，结合处在DNA上的major groove(主沟槽)。
