Yes, dear readers, the vampire who was once able to turn off his emotions like that (picture us snapping our fingers here) has been "feeling" more and more lately. And in a pivotal moment in "The Last Day" he acts out of that emotion and does something that, though it is to save Elena (Nina Dobrev), he will soon come to regret. We're not saying what, but it is something that has the potential to change the dynamic of the Stefan-Elena-Damon triangle forever.
"He's got issues," Plec said. "This thing he's done to Elena, it's sort of lesson learned. It's that, you can love someone with all of the power in your soul, but you still have to remember who they are and what they want. We sort of talked about it as a coma patient on life support, like, 'What were their instructions...and do you keep them on life support because you can't say good-bye or do you give them their wish?' That's the difference right now between Stefan and Damon: Stefan sees that in love you have to take the other person's wishes into consideration, and Damon, because he's been so screwed in the head by love and it's his Achilles heel, ["The Last Day"] episode is about him learning that lesson."
Damon is in a bad way, then, at the end of this season, but we already know that the show itself is coming back for a third installment on the 2011-2012 CW schedule. And if you thought this automatically meant Damon was safe from a fate worse than death (i.e. being removed from the show), well, you may not want to assume anything.
