I loved that line...
One of my favorites two years ago.
It's not really that much of artsy or indie, quite commercialized for a small budget movie. I personally find it quite charming and it easily strickes a cord in my heart - everybody is a bit of Summer or a bit of Tom. In a sense, it captures a very classic perspective of love - wanting, being wanted and not being wanted.

Yep, that's one way to look at it. But it's not just about first love. It applies to 2nd, 3rd or ugh, 4th sometimes too..
No doubt, Tom was a different person after summer. He was just a boy when he met Summer. The way he approached her, the way that he brushed off his feelings when he was slightly confronted by her after the Karaoke, the way that Summer can "manipulate" his feelings and actions, to some degree, it reveals why Summer never felt right with him. When someone else comes, Summer was right away certain about the things she was never certain with Tom. It's hard to swallow from Tom's perspective, but it is what it is.
As to Autumn, she comes at the right time, or it seems at the end of the movie. Tom was confident enough to strike the conversation with her and he seems to be comfortable with who he is. If this Autumn comes before Summer and Summer comes after Autumn, maybe the movie would just be 500 days of Autumn.. Right person, right time, right place, can't live without any of these three.
