F.A.316. Together with Glorfindel and Egalmoth he was sent by Turgon as an escort of Aredhel to visit the Fëanorian brothers but she intended otherwise and strayed and became lost from them.
F.A.468. When Maedhros created the Union of Maedhros also tidings came to Gondolin and Turgon and in secret he prepared for battle.
F.A.472. At midsummer this year all was ready and the army of the Union arrayed in the East and West. F.A.510. This year came the assault upon Gondolin. The people of the Fountain marched to battle in their crystal and silver array accompanied by flutes, they were, as the strongest battalion, held in reserve but the battle was going against Turgon and he send them in. It is afterwards said that the people of Ecthelion slew more Orcs than ever fell in all the battles where orcs fought against Elves and the name of Ecthelion was a terror among Orcs ever after. In the battle Ecthelion slew three Balrogs before he and Tuor had to withdraw to the Kings Square, bearing Ecthelion who had a wound in his shieldarm of the Balrog wips. When they arrived to that Square Galdor saved his life. There in the Square Gothmog came towards the weary Tuor but Ecthelion came to his aid and he drove the spike upon his helm into the breast of Gothmog and twined his legs about the Balrogs chest and they both fell into the deep fountain and died.
The name Ecthelion : In the old later abandoned Etymologies which contains Quenya / Noldorin words the name can be explained as Point of Spear derived from EK-,EKTE- spear. ehtar = spearman. êg = thorn. cf.Egthelion, ecthelion [STELEG] ech = spear.
When i looked under STELEG i read : point of spear. with an sf. to ecthelion.
I do believe Ecthelion means something like point of the spear / spearhead / front of the spear and actual meaning ; man/elf in front / commander of the assault.
There might be other solutions like Ech -Elion - Spear(man) of the star / Spear(man) of the sky / Spearhead of star/sky as EL can mean both star and sky according to the Etymologies. When using the Etymologies the name is an Noldorin name but as the Etymologies were abandoned the Noldorin language became Sindarin and in Sindarin Ecthelion means ( as i have been informed by a good friend and master in the Elvish tonque :)
